The drainages below the mine <br /> do bear waters slightly higher in total dissolved solids and <br /> alkalynity than the averages for the control drainages . <br /> In reviewing the monthly reports in Appendix D, it can be <br /> observed that the highest concentrations of ions in the <br /> waters occur during the winter months . It is during this <br /> period that much of the water in the streams is derived from <br /> mine pumpage and from outflow from the alluvial aquifer. <br /> This would be expected, as waters pumped from the mine have <br /> migrated from the surface and have spent considerable time in <br /> residence in the rock mass overlying the mine . During this <br /> residence time, the percolating waters will , to some degree , <br /> leach minerals from the rock mass . Similarly, waters in the <br /> alluvial aquifer pick up ions during their residence in the <br /> • alluvium. During the spring and summer, base flows from the <br /> mine and aquifers are diluted with snowmelt thus somewhat <br /> improving the average quality of water sampled. <br /> In addition to the ongoing stream sampling, grab sampling of <br /> discharges at the portals of the L.S . Wood, Bear Creek and <br /> Dutch Creek mines was "initiated in '1979.
