The drainage opens <br /> up on the east side of the Grand Hogback where Coal Creek <br /> discharges into the Crystal River. <br /> Snow on south facing slopes tends to melt more quickly and <br /> south facing slopes are bare a greater portion. of the year <br /> than north facing slopes . These south facing slopes are <br /> characterized by growth of scrub oak in places . <br /> Seasonal Discharge and Storm Runoff <br /> Coal Creek and its tributaries are monitored at a number of <br /> • locations by the U.S. Forest Service, U.S . Geological Survey <br /> and by Mid-Continent Resources .
