Shale member of the Mesaverde is the "upper sandstone submember" , <br /> a medium grained, buff sandstone approximately 50 feet thick <br /> • and underlying the . Placita coal seam. This sandstone unit is <br /> underlain by interbedded sandstone, siltstone, mudstone, and <br /> shale. referred to as the upper shale submember. The base of <br /> this shale submember is a layer of economic coal, eight feet <br /> in thickness and referred to as the "V" bed or the Dutch Creek <br /> seam. This coal seam was mined at the Dutch Creek No. 2 Mine, <br /> (Full , 1972) . <br /> Immediately underlying the Dutch Creek coal seam is a second <br /> massive sandstone unit called the middle sandstone submember. <br /> This unit is 120 feet thick and is comprised of buff colored, <br /> medium grained sandstone. This sandstone unit is underlain by <br /> the lower shale subunit , approximately 300 feet thick. The <br /> • base of this shale unit is considered to be the "A" and 'B" <br /> seams or the Coal Basin seam. This unit of coal is approximately <br /> 15 ft . - 20 ft. thick and has been or is currently being mined at <br /> the Dutch Creek No. 1, the L. S . Wood No . 3, the Bear Creek No . 4, <br /> and the Coal Basin Mine (Full , 1972) . This coal seam to the <br /> top of the undifferentiated unit and including the Paonia <br /> Shale member and the Bowie Shale member is considered the <br /> Williams Fork formation of the Mesaverde group .(Collins , 1977) . <br /> The Coal Basin seam is underlain by a sandstone unit approximately <br /> 140 feet thick called the Rollins sandstone member of the <br /> Mesaverde.
