J . Prime Farmland Investigation
There are no areas within the Coal Basin permit or
adjacent areas classified as prime farmlands . The Soil
Conservation Service (Glenwood Springs , Colorado) has been .
contacted and verifies that no prime farmland exists in the
Coal Basin area . (See SCS letter, Appendix III-J-1) The
surface uses in Coal Basin as discussed in Sections B and C
of Chapter VI , Postmining Land Use, have severe limitations
and are limited to pasture, woodland , or wildlife food and
cover .
In addition, the following site characteristics pre-
clude the area being classified as prime farmland :
- Soils are thin (Section III . G . )
• - Climate is severe (Section III . F . )

- Vegetation is limited .(Section III .H . )
- Land use has been limited to rangeland , wildlife
habitat and recreation. (Section III . A. )
