• ( 2) Aspen Shrubland <br /> The reference area for this sampling <br /> unit was located on a 40% , south-facing slope at an eleva- <br /> tion of about 8 , 600 ' . Total cover of 93% was distributed <br /> among seventeen species . <br /> (3) Spruce/Fir Parkland <br /> This reference area was established at <br /> 9 , 200 ' on a steep (40 percent) , north-facing slope . A total <br /> of thirty-six species provided vegetation cover of 69% . <br /> In addition, all disturbed areas had <br /> small reference samples taken to correlate with the main <br /> reference area plots . <br /> C . Disturbed areas <br /> • As indicated on the maps , the vegetation <br /> communities associated with the areas of surface disturbance <br /> within the permit area include the following predominant <br /> vegetative types : <br /> No . 1 mine portal Vegetative types are <br /> Spruce/Fir Parkland and Aspen Woodland . <br /> Spruce/Fir Parkland is variable in the composi- <br /> tion of the understory . Conifer parklands typically consist <br /> of dense clumps or islands of Engelmann Spruce Picea engelmannii , <br /> Subalpine Fir Abies lassiocarpa, and Douglas-fir Pseudotsuga <br /> menziesii interspersed within open areas dominated by a <br /> large variety of shrubs and subshrubs , graminoids , and <br /> forbs . <br /> • <br /> -3- <br />
