areas ;
- Sampling affected areas for cover , shrub
height , shrub density, tree height, tree diameter , tree
density and production.
b . Reference areas
A representative reference area was located
for the dominant successional sere of each affected area
vegetation type . Criteria used in selecting representative
reference areas included species composition, cover, produc-
tion, slope, aspect, elevation, and long-term management
practices .
As indicated on the maps , the principal
• vegetation reference areas established are located :
(1) Southeast 4 of Sec . 16 , adjacent to
No . 4 mine road ;
(2) Southeast 4 of Sec . 16, 500 ' east of the
first area;
(3) Southwest of Sec . 10, adjacent to the
No . 3 mine road .
The plant community types sampled in the
reference areas are :
(1) Aspen Woodland ;
The Aspen Woodland reference area was
established at 9 , 200 ' on a south-facing area with an average
slope of about 30 percent . This reference area contained
• twenty-five species in three distinct layers ; total cover
was 91 % .
