• - Obtaining production data for reference <br /> areas ; <br /> - Sampling affected areas for cover , shrub <br /> height , shrub density, tree height, tree diameter , tree <br /> density and production. <br /> b . Reference areas <br /> A representative reference area was located <br /> for the dominant successional sere of each affected area <br /> vegetation type . Criteria used in selecting representative <br /> reference areas included species composition, cover, produc- <br /> tion, slope, aspect, elevation, and long-term management <br /> practices . <br /> As indicated on the maps , the principal <br /> • vegetation reference areas established are located : <br /> (1) Southeast 4 of Sec . 16 , adjacent to <br /> No . 4 mine road ; <br /> (2) Southeast 4 of Sec . 16, 500 ' east of the <br /> first area; <br /> (3) Southwest of Sec . 10, adjacent to the <br /> No . 3 mine road . <br /> The plant community types sampled in the <br /> reference areas are : <br /> (1) Aspen Woodland ; <br /> The Aspen Woodland reference area was <br /> established at 9 , 200 ' on a south-facing area with an average <br /> slope of about 30 percent . This reference area contained <br /> • twenty-five species in three distinct layers ; total cover <br /> was 91 % . <br /> -2- <br />
