Daily, monthly and annual mean temperatures
are highest at lower elevations and lowest at higher eleva-
tions . However , on any given night , temperatures may be
colder in valleys or basins than in the adjacent higher
locations as a result of cold air drainage from the higher
terrain during nighttime radiational cooling . Such cooling
is most pronounced on clear , calm nights .
There is a difference of 166 Fahrenheit
degrees between the lowest (-600 at Taylor Park) and highest
(1060 at Gateway) temperatures recorded in the region . The
lowest and highest temperatures on record for the state of
Colorado -600 at Taylor Park, and 1180 at Bennett (northeast
Colorado) .
• Meteorological data collected at stations in
Pitkin and Gunnison Counties indicate that annual tempera-
ture means in the region near the permit area range from
31 . 20 to 43 . 20 .
