Box 459 Harris D. Natural Resource Trustee
Dear Mr. Patterson:
The Division of Reclamation, Mining, and Safety has completed review of the quarterly reporting
submitted for the sediment ponds, discharge monitoring reports, and waste pile for 2007 at the
Southfield Mine, #C-81-014. Please consider our comments noted in bold text and make any
necessary changes or adjustments in future reporting to the Division.
Discharge Monitoring Reports (DMR) - The DMR's submitted and reviewed reflects observations
consistent with Division monthly inspections. No discharge from any of the four sediment ponds
was recorded and/or sampled.
Sediment Ponds Inspections- For each quarter, the inspection reports demonstrate compliance
with Rule 4.05.9(17) for impoundments, which requires quarterly inspection of each
impoundment by a qualified professional specialist under the direction of a registered
professional engineer. Two sediment ponds are located at the reclaimed main facility site and
two ponds are located at the reclaimed loadout. The second quarter reports are certified by a
registered professional engineer. Observations are consistent with field observations noted
during Division inspections periodically throughout the year. Loadout pond #1 and #2 are now
accurately identified regarding their location.
The second quarter 2007 certified pond inspections also demonstrate compliance with Rules
4.05.9(14) and (15). Depth and elevation of any impounded water and the existing storage
capacity for both sediment and water were documented in the 2nd quarter reports. Please add
to the heading the correct Rule citation, 4.05.9(14), in addition to 4.05.9(15) or add the
Rule citation near the engineer signature block.
Waste Pile Inspections - The four reports submitted and reviewed meet the requirements under
Rules 4.09.1 (11) and 4.10.2(2).
We have no further questions or comments at this time. If you have questions, please call me.
Since ely
K Gorham
Environmental Protection Specialist II
Office of Office of
Mined Land Reclamation Denver • Grand Junction • Durango Active and Ihactive Mines
