Section 783 . 15 GROUND WATER INFORMATION
^• INTRODUCTION
The Mid-Continent Resources Coal Basin Mine is located in a
small topographic basin drained by Coal Creek into the Crystal
River. Coal Basin is approximately 26 square miles in size and
is rimmed by outcrops of the coal bearing Mesaverde formation.
Mid-Continent Resources currently has mining operations on
lease coal on fee title land and is planning expansion to
federal coal lease land immediately west of Coal Basin. The
existing mine portals are located on the west and southwest sides
of the basin with the coal processing plant on Coal Creek.
Future plans include expansion beneath the west divide of Coal
Basin and construction of a tunnel from the coal processing
plant , beneath the divide (Huntsman Ridge) to the proposed
• expanded mine area (Figure 783 . 15-1) .
Coal Basin is a geologically controlled structural basin created
by folding of sedimentary units over an intrusive body.
The resulting anticline is a spur at the southern end of the
Grand Hogback. The more resistant sandstones of the Mesaverde
rim the edge of the basin while the easily eroded Mancos shale
makes up the center. The economic coal producing zones are
located within the Mesaverde and outcrop as a band around the rim
of Coal Basin. The coal zones currently being mined by Mid-
Continent dip to the west and southwest, beneath the divide of
Huntsman Ridge. The surface topography of the west side of
- 1
