Alluvial Sands of Coal Creek <br /> A second area of unconsolidated sediments occurs in the Coal <br /> • Creek drainage. Sands and gravels derived from the Mesaverde <br /> formation, the Mancos shale and older units make up the Coal <br /> Creek alluvium which extends , although not continuously, from <br /> Coal Basin to the Crystal River. Coal Creek contains alluvial <br /> materials in Coal Basin; however, this material thins <br /> significantly where it flows through the water gap formed in <br /> the Grand Hogback, consequently, two separate alluvial aquifer <br /> systems lie along Coal Creek. <br /> The lower area is made up of the alluvium of Coal Creek <br /> from the Grand Hogback to the Crystal River. Mining should <br /> not affect this unconfined alluvial aquifer, as there are <br /> • no mine discharge points and no surface facilities other than <br /> roads in this area. <br /> The upper area consists of the alluvial sands and gravels <br /> within Coal Basin itself. This alluvium fills the drainage <br /> bottom in sections 10, 113 14 and -15 of T. 20. S , R. 89 .W, as <br /> mapped on Plate I . It ranges up to approximately 50 feet in <br /> thickness at the plant preparation site . At this site, Mid- <br /> Continent has drilled a number of water supply wells into the <br /> alluvium. These wells , tabulated on Table 783 . 15-3 and <br /> plotted on Plate III, show the water table in this aquifer <br /> to range from ground surface to approximately 20 feet . <br /> • <br /> 24 <br /> it <br />
