anticline as opposed to the westward dip of the hogback
immediately to the north (Collins , 1977) .
•
The sedimentary units older than the Mancos shale maintain the
form of the Grand Hogback and are steeply dipping between the
FXibif "- C-1
coal processing plant and Redstone, (See P+ace--4-) , (Full , 1972) .
0-1
is a geologic cross section illustrating the subsurface
geology of the Coal Basin Anticline and the relation of the
Dakota sandstone and older units to the coal bearing Mesaverde
formation. A thrust fault cuts these older sedimentary rocks
and thrusts them up over the Mancos shale. Drag from this
thrust fault has overturned the units and dip is locally 850
to the east (Full, 1972).. This thrust fault is unrelated to
the coal mining operation on the west side of the anticline,
as is illustrated in . 2KIV,61I .ZY 0-1
Faulting occurs along the western rim of Coal Basin and is
evident in the outcropping of the sandstone units (Full , 1972) .
The depth of the faulting is not known, although it is believed
to be related to the folding of the anticlinal structure.
12
