basin is being used as a source for the Preparation Plant
process water . These wells , in conjunction with several
additional observation wells , serve to monitor groundwater
quality . The depth to the water table varies from the
ground surface to a depth of 20 feet . The wells are plotted
on Exhibit IV-C-1 . The water quality collected by the U . S .
Geological Survey is summarized in Table III-E-1 and plotted
on a trilinear diagram Figure III-E-2 . Based on the analysis
the water is classified as a calcium, sodium, magnesium
bicarbonate type with a total dissolved solids of approximately
347 milligrams per liter . Iron and manganese are the only
parameters that appear to have a high dissolved concentration
although acceptable for domestic use .
Water that develops in the mines is
used during the mining process ,
allowed to migrate downdip either in the Coal or
the underlying Rollins Sandstone Unit or
pumped at a rate of 40 to 300 gpm from the mine .
Based on mine pump records (Table III-E-
2) the amount of pumped water increases during the spring
and significantly decreases during late fall and winter .
(2) Consolidated aquifers water quality
The knowledge of groundwater quality of
the Mesaverde aquifers is limited . During a USGS survey
only one well was located in Mesaverde Group and this well
was reported to be a calcium bicarbonate type with a total
• dissolved concentration of 181 milligrams/liter .
7
