groundwater system is saturated under water table (uncon-
fined) conditions . The aquifer system is in direct communica-
tion with the perennial Dutch, Coal , Bear and Porcupine
Creeks . The saturated alluvial materials are highly permeable
and discharge groundwater to the surface drainages during
base flow (low flow) periods . The alluvial deposits , in
essence, provide the basic temporary groundwater storage
following the peak flow events and discharges water slowly
during the recession of the snow melt runoff period naturally
augmenting flow of the Crystal and Roaring Fork Rivers
through the late summer and fall months .
Mid-Continent has completed nine ground
water observation and production wells in the alluvium . The
, .. well depths range from 10 feet to 75 feet with an estimated
+ 10 gpm production . The wells were installed by a licensed
water well driller with casing ranging from 4 ' to 6 ' in
diameter . The casing is steel and PVC, cemented in place
and sealed using standard water well drilling methods .
In addition to other shallow alluvial
aquifers , surface water flow is also being contributed to by
springs . In several areas , such as SEA, Sec . 14 , T10S . ,
R90W it has been reported by Willard Owens (1980) that the
seeps have developed "in a landslide deposit as indicated by
the topography of the area ." Similarly several springs have
developed associated with talus and rock slides in the
permit area . The recharge to these areas is supplied locally
3
i
