E . Hydrology Description
1 . Introduction
Mid-Continent contracted with the consulting firm
of Willard Owens Associates, Inc . to accomplish a hydrology
study of the Coal Basin mine permit and adjacent areas that
would provide information on ground and surface water needed
for this permit application. A copy of the Willard Owens
report is attached as Appendix III-E-1 .
The following paragraphs of this section summarize
the hydrologic information contained in the Willard Owens
report together with that obtained from other sources and
from sampling and analysis accomplished by the Company of
both ground and surface water .*
2 . Ground water
a . General
Ground water occurrence within the study area
depends on the local combination of climate, topography,
geology, structure and stratigraphy. At higher elevations
water infiltrates and percolates at the aquifer outcrop or
enters the ground water system via fractures , joints and/or
faults . The water enters reservoirs (aquifers) at the
recharge area and supplies water either to a shallow or deep
ground water system. In many instances the shallow aquifers
supply water to surface springs or seeps .
*Ground and surface water impact studies for the new coal refuse disposal
area, the tunnel portal and waste disposal area, and the tunnel to
} preparation plant disposal area were accomplished by Geo-Hydro Consulting,
Inc. in 1984. These studies are too voluminous to include in this
application but are available by contacting Mid-Continent's environmental
coordinator.
1
