`cults , there is an association in the first , second and
third north. entries of the Dutch Creek No . _ mine entry , and
in the drainage of Oilwell Creek between the No . 3 and No . 15
mine entries .
Faulting is a significant determinant of the
drainage pattern in the Coal Basin , having directly or
indirectly controlled Bear Creek, all forks of Dutch Creek, .
both forks or Oilwell Creek, the south and north forks of
Coal Creek, and Porcupine Creek. Drainages above the bottom
of the Rollins Sandstone are strongly influenced by faulting
throughout the basin, although such influence cannot be
traced in the underlieing shales .
In common with other unroofed '_accoliths of
the area , the Coal Basin features , in addition to the dikes,
a large area of baked shale near the center and numerous
apparently hydrotherm-al calcite veins . Moreover , the effect
of the igneous intrusion has apparently been a general
upo_ading of the coal rank in the basin. .
C . Geologic stratica,
The strata of Coal Basin consist , principally ,
of Niancos Shale and the Mesaverde Group , in which the coal
seams occur . (See Figures !!I-D-1 and ill-D-?) The
ilancos Shale is impermeable, and lies in a bed of 3 , 000 '
this-kness , beneath the Mesaverde formation. ihE coal sea^is -
overlie the sandstone members of the Mesaverde formation ,
which is Wade up of a series of shale , sandstone had coal
*Also , see Par . 4 .b . of Section II.I-C for drill hole locations
and data .
