The operations at Coal Basin neither have nor
• will remove strata overlieing the coal seams to be mined .
d . Near surface geology
The major surface disturbed areas in the
Coal Basin mine permit area are the five mine portals and
their related haul road systems , the preparation plant area ,
and the tunnel portal area . (See Table III-D-2)
The No . 1 , 3 , 4 and 5 mine entries have been
made to extract coal from the B bed , which forms the upper
6 ' -8' of the Coal Basin interval. The Coal Basin interval
overlies the Rollins Sandstone member of the Cretaceous
Mesaverde formation. It is the upper member of the Iles
formation, and the base of the coal-bearing series in Coal
Basin. The Rollins outcrops in a nearly vertical cliff .
The portal area of the No . 1 mine entry is
cut into the Rollins Sandstone member. Since the Rollins is
transitional into the unlieing Mancos Shale formation, which
floors the majority of the basin, the road which connects
the portal area to the preparation plant area traverses
Mancos Shale below the portal area.
The No . 2 Mine entry has been made to extract
coal from the Middle bed , which ranges from 5 ' -20 ' thickness
and overlies the Middle Sandstone member of the Williams
Fork in the Cretaceous Mesaverde formation. The Middle
Sandstone member is nearly identical to the Rollins Sand-
stone member , and outcrops in a , nearly vertical cliff .
33
