Coal related strata depths are estimated in
the area of the underyroound aorcings... The _pth.s are expected
to remain constant 1n the areas of future oDeratior_s as the
dio of the coal seams are roughly paralleled by the over-
lieing surface west of Huntsman. Ridge . (Se_ Table III-D-1)
2 . Description of geology of the permit area .
a . Strata classification , structure , and depth
The permit area is substantially the same as
the mine plan area . The mine plan area totals approximately
23 square miles while the permit area totals approximately
20 square miles . The difference lies in the inclusion of-
three square miles on the west side of Huntsman Ridge which
overlie the underground workings projected for the neat
forty Years . The areas of surface disturbance , all of which
are contained within the Coal Creek drainage of Coa= Basin,
are identical .
Coal basin is a northwest-_rending eliptical
anticline , formed by the fgilding of sedimentary rock over an
igneous intrusion, probably a Tertiary lacc:_Iith . Strata of
the basin date from the Cretaceous Period of the Mesozoic
Era . The principal formations are Msancos SInale and the
Mesaverde, although several ccnes of igneous dikes have been
encou7atered , both on the surface and in underground developmenc .
See Exhibits III-D-3 (a-c) Geology Cross Sections .
The coal bearing Mesaverde formation outcrops
on --he n o r t h, west a n d south sides of t h e e r o s i o n a l basin .
The mine Portals are located on the west _.0 sides
