The A bed lies below. the B. bed , and while the
Y • two seams converge occasionally , they are separated in
places by a shale parting which reaches as much as 39 '
thickness .
The coal quality of the A bed is inferior to
that of the "B"Bed and mining of the seam has , heretofore,
been unfeasible . However , Mid-Continent recently contracted
with the U. S . Department of Energy to pioneer a multilift
mining operation which, if feasible, will allow for an
economic recovery of both the B bed and the underlieing A bed .
Coal qualities of the A bed average :
Fixed Carbon 59. 3 percent
Volatile Matter 20. 9
Ash 19. 7
Sulfur 0. 58
• Btu 14 , 500+
Moisture free
The Placita bed overlies the Middle bed ,
with a stratigraphic separation of approximately 250 ' . The
bed is thin and irregular , the coal quality is inferior , the
reserve small. In addition, no outcrops of the Placita bed
are known to exist . The bed is thus considered to be
commercially unminable.
Exploratory drilling in the Placita bed over
an area of four square miles indicated the following thickness :
Drill Hole Coal Thickness
CB-4 : 6 . 8 feet
• CB-6 : 2 . 7 feet
CB-7 : 2 . 0 feet
CM-8 : 6 . 2 feet
19
