events will contribute to the recharge of the aquifer to a
lesser degree . Numerous small tributaries to Coal Creek,
fed by snowmelt and precipitation events , cross the outcrops
of the sand units of the Mesaverde also provide additional
recharge.
In the vicinity of the Coal Basin Mine , water
entering the Mesaverde aquifers migrates generally down-dip
to the west and northwest towards the Piceance Basin .
Permeabilities in the three sand units are expected to range
-2
from 10 to 1 ft/day . The transmissivities of the three
2
units are expected to range from 0 . 5 to 150 ft . /day . The
coals in the region do not constitute potential aquifers
because they are generally tight , poorly fractured , and
• unburned .
Most storage in the competent, well cemented
sands of the Mesaverde formation will be in intergranular
cavities , although storage will also occur in joints and
fractures . The intergranular cement fills and reduces the
porosity of the formation to about 10% with an expected
specific yield , or about 5 - 7% .
The Mesaverde Formation regionally dips to
the west and north in a large synclinal feature . Mesaverde
coal outcrops in the Grand Hogback , and is located in the
Somerset and Paonia areas , along the south and west faces of
Grand Mesa north to the Book Cliffs . Overall ground water
movement is to the north and west , towards the axis of the
24
