C . General Description of Geology and Hydrology
1 . Introductiil
The Mid-Continent coal mining operation extracts
II
coal from the Cretaceous strata in Coal Basin, a small
eroded anticline situated at the southern end of the Piceance
I
Basin and superimposed on a monocline called the Grand
Hogback.
Geographically , Coal Basin is located in south-
western Pitkin County , approximately 4 miles west of Redstone ,
which in turn is 31 miles south of Glenwood Springs , in
west-central Colorado .
The sources of information and references of
literature studies for the descriptions of the general
geology and hydrology of the Coal Basin area are listed in
• appendix III-C-1 .
2 . Description of area geology
West-central Colorado is an area of geologic
complexity . It is dll, ominated by two major geologic provinces ,
the Colorado Plateau", and the Rocky Mountains . The monocline
on which Coal Basinl'Iis superimposed forms the eastern li?ait
of the Colorado Plateau , adjoining the Rocky Mountains .
The land fo-r-ms of the Colorado Plateau occur ,
generally , as broadlllvalleys and mesas in which the Colorado
River and its tributaries , which drain the area , have formed
hundreds of youthful , isolated canyons . The predominant
Paleozoic , Messozoic and Cenozoic sedimentary rocks lie
1
