Coal leases" (Hibbets et al . 1978) . This report describes two
trap-sects which were conducted within 20 miles of our study area -- Tran-
sect 9B, 5039 acres in T. 12S. , R.91W. and Transect 9A, 1440 acres in
T. 13S. , R.92W. Transect 98 identified two prehistoric, two historic,
and one prehistoric/historic site (yielding an overall site density
of .00099/acre) . Transect 9A identified one prehistoric and one his-
toric site (site density, .001/acre) .
Publications concerning the regional prehistory include: 1)
Buckles ' work on the Uncompahgre (Buckles 1971) , in which he identifies
12 phases of the 'Uncompahgre Complex' dating from 5000 B.C. (Paleo-
Indian) to A.D. 1800 (Ute) ; 2) reports of excavations and surveys in
northeastern Utah and northwestern Colorado by Wormington (1955) ,
Wormington and Lister (1956) , 8reternitz (1965 and 1970) , and Wenger
(1956) , which establish cultural materials from Paleo-Indian, Archaic,
Fremont, Anasazi , Ute, and Historic Euro-American peoples in the
region; and 3) Jesse D. Jennings ' "Prehistory of Utah and the Eastern
Great Basin" (Jennings 1978) , which describes cultural materials from
the Desert Archaic, Anasazi , Fremont, Shoshoni , and Navajo.
RESEARCH RATIONALE
Because there is little information available concerning either the
archaeology of this particular geographic area or that of high altitudes
• in gene?-al , the search for potential archaeological sites in this region
is scientifically imperative for the development of a comprehensive data
base for western Colorado.
FIELD METHOD
A Class III inventory of each of the proposed drill hole locations
was made by walking a spiral pattern from the center stake to a diameter
of 100 feet. Access roads (both new and existing, to-be-upgraded) were
walked in a zigzag pattern which extended 25 feet to either side of the
centerline. Suspect areas (knolls, springs, etc. ) within 50 meters of
the proposed drill hole locations/access roads were intensively in-
spected.
SURVEY RESULTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
No cultural materials, either prehistoric or historic, were found in
the survey area and it is recommended that the area be given archaeologi-
cal clearance.
• V
4
