Slope on the hillside is rather steep, varying between 70
and 300. Many intermittent drainages cut this side of Huntsman ridge, and
several active springs (some as high as 11,000 feet) were observed in the
study area, providing year-round sources of water.
Each of the proposed drill hole sites is located in a clearing. Pad
• #1 sits beside an intermittent drainage, approximately 1,000 feet below the
ridge top; Pad #2 is located at the head of an intermittent drainage, only
400 feet below the ridge top; Pads #3, #4, and #5 occur on the tops of small
ridges emanating from Huntsman Ridge.
Access to the study area is gained by traveling south from Carbondale
approximately 16.5 miles on Colorado 130 to the Coal Creek road (intersecting
from the west) , which is followed approximately 7.5 miles to Mid-Continent's
#4 mine. One then ascends Huntsman Ridge (via the drainage to the southwest),
from which access to the study area is gained. (See map.)
Geology/Soils
The upper part of the Mesaverde Formation underlies the study area.
These beds were deposited during the Upper Cretaceous period and consist of
interlayered sandstone, shale, and coal beds (Tweto, Moench, and Reed 1978) .
Large sandstone boulders are scattered throughout the study area, especially
near the top of Huntsman Ridge.
Soils in the study area are dark, shaley/clayey loams, formed in re-
siduum from the underlying sandstone, shale, and coal beds. They are shal-
low and fairly dry near the upper elevations of the study area, becoming
• more moist lower on the ridge.
2
