'4
iaT Of
United States Department of the Interior
o OFFICE OF SURFACE MINING
Reclamation and Enforcement
• '"%t: BROOKS TOWERS
1020 15TH STREET
DENVER,COLORADO 80202
2 7 IMAY 1980
MEMORANDUI i
TO: Kid-Continent Resources' Coal Basin 1.1ine Plan File (CO 0011)
FROM: Judy A. Shafer, Regional Archaeologist Ire__7
SUBJECT: Cultural Resources Survey Performed on Mid-Continent Resources'
Coal Basin Hine Plan
During November, I conducted a one-day survey of the following areas within
the mine plan area:
• 1) the main coal refuse pile expansion,
2) the rock audit (tunnel) spoils area.
I did not locate any historic or prehistoric cultural material.
These areas are the only additional areas, for the life-of-mine, that will be
disturbed.
Since there is approximately 2000-3000 feet of overburden .it is believed that
there will be no subsidence or that it will be so negligable as to not be a
potential threat to any cultural resources which may exist in the mine plan
area.
The historic town of Coal Basin is located within the mine plan area and is
currently being evaluated by the Company as to its eligibility to the National
Register of Historic Places. Because there is no public access to the area,
no plans for surface disturbance in that area it is felt that the potential
for adverse effects to the site would be very low. Since no standing
structures remain vandalism would not be likely. There will be no mining
under the site location so subsidence, if any, will not be a potential
threat. However, should the site be determined eligible OS11 should propose a
stipulation that will ensure that this site not be disturbed for the
life-of-mine and during any post mining land use.
cc: Hs. Doug Bowman, y/
Environmental Coordinator
Mid-Continent Resources, Inc.
