(Pueblo), <br /> 1893 - Work begun on railroad from Carbondale to Redstone and Coal Basin. <br /> First phase of development of Coal Basin Mi ­ and first structures <br /> erected. Work halted after repeal of the nan Silver Purchase Act. <br /> 1898 - Work resumes on the Crystal River Railroad ! Coal Basin Mine. <br /> Development of coking operation in Ruston <br /> 1900 to 1902 - Completion of developmental phase for _jai Basin, Redstone anc <br /> Crystal River Railroad. Town site established as a political , <br /> economic and social unit. Town site was a model of its time with <br /> modern conveniences , such as running water and controlled drainaee. <br /> Sixty-seven houses, a company store, school , depot, hotel , church, <br /> Coal Basin Mine Club, library, individual outhouses for each struc- <br /> ture, as well as the mine buildings , stables , shops , railroad round <br /> house and warehouse. <br /> Site occupied year-round for only two years . Because of snow a sea- <br /> sonal transhumance was established between Coal Basin town site and <br /> Redstone or Carbondale. <br /> 1903 - Coal Basin Mine, Crystal River Railroad and Colorado Fuel & iron <br /> Company acquired by George Gould and John D. Rockefeller. <br /> 1909 - January 12. Town abandoned during annual winter transhumance. <br /> 1909 - Early spring. Mine closed. A few families return to retrieve <br /> personal heirlooms and other valuables. <br /> Post-1909 - Local homesteaders and ranchers "salvage" entire houses as well a--- <br /> portions of others for re-use. Seasonal destruction of townsite <br /> by avalanches and other national and human elements. <br /> 1956 - Coal Basin coal leases acquired by Leighton S. Wood of Mid Continent <br /> Resources. <br /> 1974 - Coal Basin Mine reopened. Historic artifacts from old mine donated <br /> to Redstone Historical Society by Mid Continent Resources. Remains <br /> of structures 1-15, camp room, tipple, storerooms and shop destroyed <br /> during modernization operations at Coal Basin Mine. <br /> 1977 - Spring. Major flooding of town site adds to natural deterioration <br /> and artifact redistribution. <br />
