beyond Huntsman Ridge. Records of the White River National
• Forest for cattle allotments extend to 1946 . (See Table
III-A-1 and Exhibit III-A-1) The U. S . Forest Service report
on "Past and Present Conditions of Range and Wildlife
Resources in Coal Basin" indicates that :
"Range conditions have always been good in Coal Basin ,
except for areas of high natural erosion, and some
small over-grazed areas dating to the early 1940 ` s .
Corrective management has improved range conditions
since 1945 , and present stocking levels are one-fourth
lower than at that time . With management , range
quality should improve in the future , but as a result
of natural succession grasslands in Coal Basin are very
slowly converting to aspen and confier forests , there-
fore reducing the quantity of grassland range . "
The U. S . Forest Service records are indicated
on Table III-A-1.
The west and south slopes of Huntsman Ridge ,
which overlie underground workings , in the Gunnison National
Forest , have three grazing allotments . (See Appendix III-A-
2) They are :
Deadhorse S&G - 2 , 400 sheep
Huntsman S&G - 800 sheep
Lee Creek - 750 sheep
C .
