alpine and subalpine areas of high relief , moderate
precipita-tion and unfavorable bedrock chemistry . The U . S . Soil
Conservation Service has identified four soil associations
in Coal Basin , of which three are classed VII and VIII in
the SCS Soil Capability Classification System. The system
ranks soil capabilities from Class I (good agricultural
land) to Class VIII (land which cannot be expected to return
significant on-site benefits from management for crops ,
grasses or trees) . (Appendix III-A-3 & Table III-A-2)
A limited portion of the basin (7%) is ranked
Class VI by the SCS (range or pasture improvements may be
practical unless precluded by factors such as steep slopes
or severe climate ) . Steep slopes and severe climate
• conditions are additional factors in Coal Basin, and the SCS
recommendation is that the Class VI soils are not generally
suited for crop cultivation. The soil capabilities of the
remainder of the basin are rated classes VII and VIII , which
identify them as unsuited to cultivation.
15
