391 - 3
PLANS AND SPECIFICATIONS
Prepare plans and specifications for each field
or management unit according to the Criteria
and Operation and Maintenance sections of this
standard.
Specifications shall describe the requirements
for applying this practice to meet the intended
purpose.
Complete a Colorado Riparian Forest Buffer
391, Conservation Practice Job Sheet for each
field or management unit.
OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE
Inspect the Riparian Forest Buffer periodically
and protect it from the adverse impacts of
excessive vehicular and pedestrian traffic, pest
infestations, concentrated flows, pesticides,
livestock or wildlife damage, and fire.
Replace dead trees or shrubs and control
undesirable vegetative competition until the
buffer is at, or will progress to, a fully functional
condition.
Any manipulation of species composition, stand
structure and stocking by cutting or killing
selected trees and understory vegetation will
sustain the intended purpose(s). Refer to
Conservation Practice Standard 666, Forest
Stand Improvement, for applicable criteria.
Manage or exclude livestock and potentially
harmful wildlife species in the buffer. Refer to
Conservation Practice Standards 528,
Prescribed Grazing, and or 472, Use Exclusion,
for applicable criteria.
Do not negatively affect water quality with
fertilizers, pesticides and other chemicals used
to maintain buffer function. Refer to the Nutrient
Management 590, and or Pest Management
595, Conservation Practice Standards for
applicable criteria.
REFERENCES
Colorado Field Office Technical Guide, Section
IV.
