STATE OF COLORADO
DIVISION OF RECLAMATION, MINING AND SAFETY
Department of Natural Resources
1313 Sherman St., Room 215
Denver, Colorado 80203
Phone: (303) 866-3567
FAX: (303) 832-8106
COLORADO
D I V I S I ON OF
RECLAMATION
MINING
SAFETY
Bill Ritter, Jr.
Governor
May 19, 2008 Harris D. Cattany
Division Director
Natural Resource Trustee
Weston CO 81091
RE: Lorencito Canyon Mine, #C-96-084
Dear Mr. and Mrs. Guara:
The Division of Reclamation, Mining, and Safety received your letter regarding the Lorencito
Canyon Mine on May 15, 2008. While your letter did not reference any specific permitting
action by Lorencito Coal Company, this site is currently going through the process of permit
renewal. At this time, the mine is approved as a reclamation only permit with no further coal
mining contemplated or approved. However, the mine must have a valid permit to conduct
reclamation until all reclamation bond is released, no sooner than ten years after the last
reseeding at the site. This is the reason we are going through the permit renewal process.
While the potential for future coal mining may exist, at this time, no applications for a coal
mining permit on the Hill Ranch property have been received as of the writing of this letter.
Your letter did not provide any possible cause as to the cracking of your house. While
blasting operations certainly have the potential to cause damage to structures, Lorencito Coal
Company has not conducted blasting operations any time within the last six years.
Furthermore, all blast monitoring and observations indicated that blasting was conducted in
accordance with the applicable laws and with allowable limits regarding ground motion. It is
not possible for the Division to investigate any blast damage claim or any other damage claim
more than six years after the fact.
If you have any further questions or comments, please contact me.
Sincerely,
r
Ke t Gorham
Environmental Protection Specialist 11
Office of Office of
Mined Land Reclamation Denver • Grand Junction • Durango Active and Inactive Mines
