MORR►SON-KNUDSEN COMPANY,INC.
1 .5 ALTERNATE LOCATIONS OF REFUSE PILES
A few locations were investigated for probable refuse sites. The -
most logical ones are the ones within a short distance from the coal
washing plant needing a minimum of transportation. The refuse pile may
r
be extended in two distinct places . Each site is described below.
1 .5.1 Cross Ridge Refuse Pile
Figure 1-1 shows the location of this cross-ridge site. Two config-
urations are shown using the same toeline, located on the top of the ridge
between Dutch Creek and. Bear Creek. In the event of an extended mine life
of 60 years , the refuse pile may be expanded westward as shown in Figure
1-1 . Table 1 .5.1-1 shows the two geometries and the resultant volumes.
TABLE 1 .5.1-1
PILE NO. SLOPE HEIGHT SLOPE ANGLE VOLUME
(ft-)— (degrees mmcy
1 250' 300 8.99
2 300' 270 10.00
The choice between the two configurations is dependent upon opera-
tional considerations, although the 27.0 slope provides a slightly higher
volume. The surface area for both refuse piles is the same, approximately
73 acres. This location will necessitate Mid-Continent acquiring approxi-
mately 30 acres of land beyond the currently defined property boundary.
The cross-ridge refuse pile would present a minimum of problems with
water control . It would not encroach upon .the channels of flood plains of
either Bear or Dutch Creek. A collection ditch at the bottom of the pile,
1-12
