(` ?'`•J MORRISON-KNUDSEN COMPANY,INC.
TABLE 1 .3. 3.-2
• PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF REFUSE
AND FOUNDATION MATERIAL
MATERIAL ANGLE OF FRICTION COHESION DENSITY
degrees (psf pcf
Coal Refuse 260 1100 90
Soil Foundation 300 500 90
As mentioned earlier, a drilling, sampling and laboratory geotechni-
cal testing program was completed to determine the actual material charac-
teristics of the refuse pile and foundation. The details of the program
will be reported in a later report section.
1 .3.4 Geology
C
The Mid Continent mines are located in the Coal Basin area of the
Carbondale coal field. The elevation in the basin varies between approxi-
mately 7000 and 11 ,800 feet. Coal Basin is an anticline with Mancos shale
as most of the floor of the anticline. The Mancos shale is easily erodable
and generally of low competence. Faulting is widely present in the area,
and most of the drainages, such as Bear Creek and Dutch Creek, are controlled
by faulting (this information gained through correspondence with Mid-Con-
tinent) .
1 .3.5 Hydrology
The coal basin area is drained by Coal Creek, a perennial stream. The
present refuse pile is located along the south side of Coal Creek, between
Dutch Creek and Bear Creek. One of the alternate sites will be located in
C
1-7
