MORRISON-KNUDSEN COMPANY,INC.
impurities and carbonaceoLl's shale (bone) . In general , refuse from such
a coal washing process is likely to contain very little coal .
1 .3.2 Transportation and Placement
The hydrologic and strength characteristics of a refuse pile depend,
to a large extent, on the mode of transportation and placement of the re-
fuse. In the Mid-Continent operation, the fine and coarse fractions of
the refuse are combined in the plant and transported by a conveyor belt
to the edge of the refuse pile. A dozer spreads the refuse in layers on
the surface of the refuse ,pile. The ground is cleared of all vegetation
before refuse is deposited on it. The above method of transportation and
placement is a desirable one, as far as stability of the refuse pile is
concerned, because of the compaction inherent to the process of bulldozer
spreading.
C• 1 .3.3 Material Characteristics
As mentioned above, the refuse contains both fine and coarse fractions
in a so-called "closed system" of disposal . A closed system of disposal
generally results in a refuse material which is much harder to define phy-
sically than in a system where the coarse and fine fractions are placed
separately. An indication of the material size involved was given by re-
results of sieve analyses 'performed on the samples collected at the combined
coarse and fine refuse discharge onto the final refuse belt. The analyses
was performed by Mid-Continent' s coal washing plant personnel . Table
1 .3.3-1 shows the average sizes of the refuse samples. From fieldgobser-
vation, it is expected that, due to the mechanical actions of belt dis-
charge, front-end loader and dozer operations, and finally loading under
its own weight, there is further reduction of size of the refuse material .
1 -5
