r MORRISON-KNUDSEN COMPANY,INC.
it
The foundation material is found to be mostly clayey, gravelly sand
with some interbedded clay.'I The clay layers have to be considered in
the final design of the future refuse piles.
The present and proposed refuse piles were re-evaluated in the light
of the laboratory. test results_ It is found that the factors of safety,
with the new physical characteristics , are mostly found to be higher than
the previous values . Although, in one profile of the existing refuse pile,
the factor of safety is slightly lower.
Recommendations for data necessary for further detailed design work
are made in the narrative material to follow, including large scale con-
tour maps of the project area and collection of hydrological and meteoro-
logical' data. °
Recommendations for detailed design of the refuse pile have also been
made. Based upon more accurate hydrological data and utilizing the results
of the field and laboratory geotechnical investigation, a more reliable de-
sign of the refuse pile will be possible for the finally selected site.
1 .2 INTRODUCTION
This study has been performed to determine, in a preliminary manner,
a long range plan for disposal of refuse from the coal washing plant of
the Mid-Continent Coal and Coke Company, near Redstone, Colorado. Stabi-
lity of the present and proposed refuse piles had to be examined using
historical and library data defining physical properties of material , hy-
drological data, etc.
After the commencement of the study, a program consisting of drilling,
sampling and laboratory testing of the refuse and foundation material was
1-3
