MORRISON-KNUDSEN COMPANY,INC.
SECTION 1
'• REFUSE DISPOSAL
1 .1 SUMMARY
A preliminary study of the long range plan for disposal of refuse
from the coal washing plant was performed for Mid-Continent Coal and
Coke Company near Redstone, Colorado under Morrison-Knudsen Company, Inc. ,
Work Order Number 1097-01 . This report contains. the findings of the study.
At present, refuse from Mid-Continent's coal washing plant is deposi-
ted in an area adjacent to the plant. Alternate locations for the long
range refuse disposal site were examined. Two sites, one across the ridge
between Dutch and Bear Creek and the other located on the drainage of Bear
Creek, were found to have the needed capacity of approximately 8-10 mil-
lion tons. The first of these alternatives, located across the ridge be-
tween Dutch and Bear Creeks, is preferable for refuse disposal because it
is located nearer to the wash plant and presents a minimum of problems-
with water control . The second alternative site extends across Bear Creek
and would necessitate a diversion facility of Bear Creek approximately
16,000 feet in length. In addition, this second site is located farther
from the wash plant requiring a longer transporatation distance.
As a part of the scope of work, the stability of the present and the
proposed refuse piles was examined using physical properties available from
the literature and assumptions based upon field observation. Based upon
this preliminary evaluation; and to be later verified by specific materials
analyses, M-K felt that the present refuse pile had an adequate factor of
( safety within its current configuration. Evaluation of the proposed re-
l.
