The mine pad areas have been determined to have "K"
• factors that range from 0 . 35 to 0 . 42. The basis for
this determination is that construction pads are mainly
formed on excavated bedrock and compacted rock backfill.
Small localized surface areas will have a mixture of
dust composed mainly of black shale with some coal dust.
The sediment pond design volumes are based on the cal-
culated sediment yields with a total pond storage capacity
for 3-year accumulation of sediment. The operator is
bound by law to maintain the sediment pond by removal of
sediment that is in excess of 50 per cent of the esti-
mated sediment storage.
The estimated "K" factors for each mine pad with coal
dust on it are as follows :
• Estimated
,K11
Mine Factor
Site Conditions Thickness
1 0_ 42 Some coal and black shale 1"
dust
2 0 . 40 Little coal and black shale 0 . 1"
dust
3 0 . 35
Little Coal dust
5 0 . 35
Little Coal dust 0 . 1"
*Note that loose coal and black shale dust are restricted
to vicinity of conveyor only at Mine 1.
The K factor used for the Mine 1 pad. area is modified to
0. 70 as recommended by CMLRB. This modified "K" factor
considers the greater thickness of black shale mixed with
coal dust. The . revised estimated sediment yield of
0 . 122 of for Mine 1 pad.
-2-
