This proposal calls for the removal of 25,000
tons of gravel yeazly for 10-15 yeazs, creating two permanent ponds at 10-25 feet or more
below the current water level consisting of a total of 35.9 acres of water surface area, plus
asphalt processing:
In order to protect the integrity of our ditch, our head gate, the intake channel from the
Yampa River, and our access road, the Deep Cut Irrigating Ditch Inc. would like the
following concerns addressed.
1. Destabilization of the Area - We understand that this proposal calls for the
removal of 25,000 tons of gravel yearly for at least 10-15 yeazs, creating two permanent
ponds -one 19.80 acres and the other 16.10 acres - at least 10-25 feet below the current
water level in depth. This removal of tonnage of material will create an unstable
condition for the land; the natural flow of the Yampa River; the natural drainage; and the
ground water. Currently this area is a flat pasture land. As the top soil and gravel are
removed; with the creation of two deep ponds; as the top soil is stock piled; and 50 ft.
buffer roads are created, we are concerned about the future stability of the area with the
close proximity to our intake channel, our head gate, and our irrigation ditch -.
2. Flooding in the Area - In the spring of the year, when the Yampa River floods, it
spreads out over the pasture lands along the river, and occasionally creates an alternative
river bed. The Gravel Pit Plans call for the construction to begin with only 100 ft. buffer
zone from the Deep Cut Ditch intake channel which is 1000 + ft. long. T'he Ditch
Company cleans and maintains this channel, as it flows duectly to our head gate. The
head gate will be approximately 200 feet from the construction. The Yampa River is a
wild river and the concern is that during the spring high water -with the destabilization
