7763 Rd 38
Mancos, Co 81328
April 28, 2008
Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Board ~,~ ~~~~~-~,,
Division of Recaamation, Mining and Safety ~
1313 Sherman St. Rm 215 APR 3 0 2008
Denver, Colorado 80203
Division ur Keclamation,
Mining and Safety
To whom it may concern,
I am writing in regard to the McStone Aggregate LLC, proposed mining operation that
will be located on Highway 160 in Mancos, Co. to be called the Mud Creek Pit. There is
already an existing gravel mining pit adjacent to the proposed pit with excessive traffic
without accommodating highway access. There is no turning lane for access on and off
the highway. This already poses a safety hazard to the drivers of the trucks and the
general public on the highway, that is not being addressed. Considering your department
name as mining and safety, I feel this is a legitimate concern.
There are excessive diesel emissions from the trucks entering and leaving the existing
pit. This combined with the dust/sand carried by the consistent, strong winds into the area
south of the highway up to and trapped by Bobcat Mountain causes an air pollution
problem especially because the areas already mined have not been reclaimed.
We have also learned that reclamation at the McStone property will not be adequate
due to insufficient water rights needed to restore the mined areas. Again there will be
particulate matter blown uncontrollably by the winds increasing and prolonging the air
pollution problems. I think again this a safety issue for the residents of this valley.
I am mentioning the existing pit issues because they are setting a precedent that I do
not want to be considered as the standard for future operations. These issues are serious
and affect everyone here. To compound these problems with more mining operations of
the same quality would be extremely unhealthy and unsafe to say the least.
• ~.~
I am asking that these issues be considered when reviewing the application for the
Mud Creek Pit. Thank you.
Nancy Segel n"
,. n ~ ~^
