Additional Page
2008 Annual Report
Winkler Light Aggregate Quarry
M-1989-065
Centennial Materials, Inc.
Anniversary Date: April 26
Overview of Permit Year: During the 2007/2008 operating year the operation expanded further to the south
and the amount of land in reclamation increased more than the mining area increased. Most of the operation
remains much as it was last year.
Annual Report Maps: Enclosed are three color maps showing the primary areas of disturbance and the type
of disturbance occurring in each area. Map 1 shows the entire site and is primarily a guide map. Maps 2 includes
the Main Quarry portion and Map 3 shows the information for the Cut Stone Quarry area. For details of
acreages please see the maps.
Affected Lands: The amount of affected land in the operation technically showed an increase. All of this
increase is contained in the expansion southward of the Main Quarry less the amount of new land placed in
final reclamation. A new area of reclamation has been completed with backfilluig and is being topsoiled and
prepared for seeding in May of this year. This will increase the amount of land in full reclamation and will
roughly balance the expansion with the reclamation. The Cut Stone Quarry area showed no changes.
Revegetation: Past revegetation efforts showed good progress. At this point it appears that it takes from 3 to 4
years to produce excellent growth comparable to the undisturbed land (see photos). Species diversity is less on
the reclaimed land. However, invasion of the fortis that increase diversity on undisturbed land are invading the
reclaimed land. Both wind and water erosion control on reclaimed land is excellent. Past weed control efforts
have been very effective with only minor amounts of weed growth present in isolated locations where
previously the weed density was high. First year growth tends to be somewhat weedy, but the annual weeds
decline in the second year and, with treatment, most of the remaining weeds are eluninated by the third year.
From there on it is simply a matter of weed control maintenance of the few that persist.
Expected Activity (2008/2009): The Cut Stone Quarry will probably change very little. The main quarry may
expand a few more acres to the south and then west toward the large powerline. Future mining will probably
occur only in Phase 2. Additional backfilling in Phase 1 will occur as overburden becomes available.
Photos: A series of photos primarily showing the reclamation areas are included. As evident in the photos,
blending of the backfilled land into the undisturbed adjacent land is excellent and has essentially returned the
land to its original topography.
Bonding: This operation is covered by a self bond
M-1989-065 Winkler Light Aggregate Quarry
Schmidt Construction Company 2008 Annual Report Page 1 of 1
