Chapter II
d. Light Use Roads.
• The roads leading to Mine Portals #3, 4 and 5 have been designated, and are being
maintained, as light use roads until resumption of mining from portals #3, 4 and 5. At
that time these roads will be used for coal haulage, as they were previously. The
drainage system designed for the haul road usage has been maintained, as indicated in
App. II-B-7 Att. 2. The applicable road segments are indicated at II-B-App.7-Att.2 as
Roads C, F, E and G.
During the preceding permit term, Mid-Continent received permission to upgrade and
extend alight-use road segment which reaches from Coal Basin over Huntsman Ridge,
to the west side, above the underground workings. Technical and minor revisions were
approved by MLRD. The uses of the road include subsidence monitoring, exploration
activity, and access to drill sites for a planned coal degassification program.
The segment extending from No. 4 portal to the top of Huntsman Ridge has been
constructed. Some work will be done on sections of an existing drill road on the west
side of Huntsman Ridge. An additional two miles of new road will be constructed,
extending to the north over Gunnison National Forest and Mid-Continent fee land.
Exhibit II-B-6 indicates light-use roads as they occur within the permit area.
e. Public Road - Highway to Mine Facility
• The central complex area is accessed by a four-mile road which leads to/from Colorado
State Highway 133. The road follows most of the way along the rail line laid at the turn
of the century, and has been in use as a road since approximately 1953.
f. Conveyor System
Conveyor belts are used exf~nsively in the Mid-Continent operations. Exhibit II-B-7
shows the system.
The uses are as follows:
Mine face to surface storage. Coal is transported from the working face through one
entry of the Adit/Rock Tunnel and overland to the raw coal stockpile(s), where it is
deposited.
The coal is then conveyed by belt from raw coal storage to the preparation plant,
separated from rock, and conveyed by belt to clean coal storage; meanwhile, the
refuse is conveyed fromt he wash plant to the Sutey Refuse pile for disposal.
•
21
~, ,.
