Chapter II

In recent years, winter access has been maintained to Mine Portals #1 and #2, but has
not been maintained to Mine Portals #3, #4 and #5, given their current idle status.
Other than snow removal, maintenance of the roads is generally done after snowmelt
and before snowfall.
Spring/Summer Maintenance.
Road maintenance after the snow melts will include repair of ditches, clean-out and
repair of culverts and cross drainage structures, grading of the road, re-establishment
of water bars and berms, repair of tilling and erosion channels.
After storm events, road ditches and culverts will be inspected to identify areas of storm
damage, filled-in ditches or plugged culverts. Repair and clean-out will be done as
expeditiously as possible.
Material cleaned from ditches, catchment basins, culvert installation repair, and B.A.T.
ponds on the roads will be used as a growth medium for vegetation, for berm material,
or to cover trash.
• Culverts.
Culverts will be inspected to determine whether repair or replacment is necessary.
Replacement of culverts will be judged necessary when the culvert has been damaged
so as to fail to pass flows, or when the culvert has been worn and rusted to the point
that leakage endangers the integrity of the road. On light use roads, rolling dips may
be installed in place of rusted culverts.
Ditches.
During the spring, and as necessary after storm events, the ditches will be dragged to
clean them of debris and sediment.
Catchment Basins.
Maintenance of the basins will usually be done with a trackhoe and/or front end loader.
Sediment will be cleaned from the basins on an as necessary basis.
B.A.T. Ponds -Off Road.
• For maintenance of ponds which are in areas difficult to access, such as below the
downslopes of Road D, 110+00 to 100+00, a trackhoe will be used in preference to
equipment such as dragline/trucks, which would require building a road. Sediment
removed from the ponds will be deposited at the site, vegetated and mulched.
19
Revised 6/92
