Chapter II
response to the concerns of MLRD and the OSM, have been included in this permit for
reference purposes. Adit/Rock Tunnel materials are in App. II-B-3, and cover the
period from 1979-1987. Materials relevant to the Sutey Pile (New Refuse Facility) are in
App. II-B-5, and cover the period from 1984-1987.
In addition, because operations have been changed in recent times, a brief description
of recent operations history has been included as Appendix II-B-2, for easy reference
and to clear up any confusion as to changes in operations since the last permit
application for Mid-Continent's Coal Basin operation.
Please note that use of these terms in the CURRENT operations description (Chapter
II) denote the following:
a. Adit/Rock Tunnel.
Describes the twin-bore rock tunnel which provides transportation to and from the two
seams being mined.
Men, equipment and materials are transported through one bore, and coal is
transported from the face through the other. Although this facility has been referred to
previously as "the tunnel" and the "rock tunnel" it will be described as the Adit/Rock
Tunnel to avoid confusion with the rock tunnels at the No. 5 and No. 2 Main Entries.
b. Main Entry or Entry.
The Adit/Rock Tunnel has been operational since the fall of 1987. Before that time,
coal was mined from the two seams through five entries, which followed the coal from
outcrop, at various points around the Coal Basin, downdrift. These were previously
known as Mines No. 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. The objective of the modernization program has
been to consolidate operations underground into a single operating unit, rather than
five separate units of production.
To be more properly descriptive, the operator will refer to what was Mine No. 1 as Entry
#1, Mine No. 2 as Entry # 2, Mine No. 3 as Entry #3, etc., although some baseline
information and maps which date from an earlier period, may not reflect the changed
terminology.
Entry #1 is the main entry to the B-bed, and Entry #2 is the main entry to M-bed as of
the time of permit submittal. This is indicated on the maps which show current mine
plans by reference to the B-bed Entry and the M-bed Entry.
c. Sutey Pile or Coal Refuse Disposal Area.

E
