• <br />COAL BASIN MINE PERMIT APPLICATION <br />MID-CONTINENT RESOURCES, INC. <br />CARBONDALE, COLORADO <br />EXECUTIVE SUMMARY <br />Mid-Continent Resources, Inc. operates an underground coal mine from surface <br />facilities located in the Coal Basin. The basin is characterized by steep topography at <br />• high elevation. Underground mining is at depth. <br />Coal Basin is situated in southwestern Pitkin County, Colorado, in the White River <br />National Forest. It is approximately four miles from the small town of Redstone, and 31 <br />miles south of Glenwood Springs via state highways 82 and 133. (See General <br />Location Map, Figure Intro. 1). <br />Mining began in 1956, and operations have been continuous since then. The <br />underground workings extend westerly, under the Huntsman Ridge, into Gunnison <br />County and the Gunnison National Forest. (See Specfic Location Map, Figure Intro. 2). <br />Mine Plan Area <br />The Mine Plan Area covers 11,386 acres and includes the areas of surface disturbance <br />and the land above the past, current and anticipated underground workings. The total <br />disturbed area is 332.9 Acres. The life of mine operations will be conducted on 5,841 <br />acres of federal coal lease lands, 3,883 acres of private lands and 1,662 acres of <br />federal non-coal special use lands. Of the total, 9,319 acres are coal bearing, including <br />the 5,841 acres of federal coal lease lands, and 3,478 acres of private lands. <br />r~ <br /> <br /> <br />
