-~ -.~
Rock properties for Mancos shale and Sandstone were obtained from
samples and soils manuals. Bacause the shear strength of the
surrounding host rock is relatively high, the shear strength of
the concrete used for seal construction was used as the limiting
factor in calculating resisting strength t500psi). Standard
yi el d strength for steel was used for calculation of rei nforci ng
bars.
Seals will be constructed of concrete reinforced with steel. A
typical seal is shown in SK-2. Constructin begins with creation
of a keyway cut into the perimeter and removal of all loose and
fractured material. Resin grouted bolts will~be installed in a
ring around the opening. A double mesh of #8 rebars will be
anchored to the roof bolts and linked across the opening. The
bulkhead will be completed with concrete, poured 18-36 inches
thick, around the reinforcing bars.
The seal bulkheads will have a resisting stength greater than
three times the f orce of water. As the tunnel is being
developed, additional hydrological and geological data will be
collected, and the optimum seal design may be re-evaluated.
Copy: J.H.Turner
M,J.Turnipseed
•

4 4 __
