App. II-B-2
Since 1961 the coal has been "washed" in the preparation plant, which is situated at
the central complex yard. Rock and other impurities, separated from the salable
coal, have been deposited in refuse piles.
There are two refuse piles. The "Old Pile" is situated on the east side of the central
complex yard, adjacent to the parking lot. Refuse from the washing process was
deposited on the old pile until 1985.
The "Sutey Pile" has received preparation plant refuse since 1985, and will be the
site for disposal of refuse until the completion of mining.
6. Adit/Rock Tunnel.
Face-up work for the Adit/Rock Tunnel portal began in 1979. It was a cut and fill
program, with the fill used for a yard area outside the portal.
As materials were excavated from the tunnel, a permanent fill area was constructed
south of the portal. In addition, the portal yard was extended, using materials from
the tunnel excavation, in 1987.
Surface facilities have been constructed on the fill.
• Extension of the Adit/Rock Tunnel to the B-bed and the M-bed, in the areas of No. 1
and No. 2 Mines, have allowed use of the twin bores of the Adit/Rock Tunnel as the
major transportation artery in the mine operation since the fall of 1987.
In addition, conveyor belts have replaced truck haulage as the chief means of
surface coal transport, and of refuse disposal.
As mentioned previously, however, the Adit/Rock Tunnel must be completed,
including lateral extensions to the workings of Nos. 3, 4 and 5, in order to entirely
replace the use of the mountain trucks, haul roads and portals for coal haulage.
7. Anticipated Development.
The modernization program will be continued. Major facets include:
Raw coal storage will be in underground bunkers. Face-up work has been done for
these bunkers. Presently, storage is in open piles.
The Adit/Rock Tunnel will be continued through to the west side of Huntsman Ridge,
allowing an additional escapeway and ventilation intake.
Lateral extensions to the workings of Nos. 3, 4 and 5 will allow transportation to and
from these areas by the Adit/Rock Tunnel, thus replacing the haul roads and portals
as the major transportation arteries for haulage of coal, machinery and materials.
4
