The site of the expansion pit consists mainly of native lodge pole pine. Mining of this site will have
some impacts on wildlife, such as removal of habitat and disturbance due to mining activity. Returning the site to
a condition similar to the current condition after mining is completed can minimize impacts to wildlife. During
stages of rehabilitation, care should be taken to incorporate contouring of slopes to allow for minimal erosion and
ease of use for wildlife. The Division of Wildlife recommends planting a mix of native grasses and forbs species
that closely matches the surrounding habitat. In addition, identification and control of weeds will minimize
impacts to wildlife.
This area of the forest has heavy use during the summer months for access to fishing and wildlife watching. The
area is also popular during hunting season for deer and elk. The Division of Wildlife requests that hauling and
crushing be ceased two days before a big game season begins and limited during the hunting season.
Please feel free to contact District Wildlife Manager Gene Abram ((970)724-3372) should you have any questions
regarding these comments or with any future concerns. He will be available to assist with this development
process to help mitigate the impact that this development will have on the wildlife in the area. He will also be
available to help during the reclamation process to improve the wildlife value of the site.
Sincerely,
Lyle H.
