8 April 2008
Deb E. Zack
Envirorunental Protection Specialist
Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety
Department of Natural Resources
1313 Sherman Street, Room 215
Denver, CO 80203
~~~~~~~~
~PR 17 2000
Division or rceclamation,
Mining and Safety
-_ Re: Riverside.Aggregates, LLC, #2 Verhoeff Pit (File No. M-2008.01__3_) (CHS #52138)
Dear Ms. Zack:
Thank you for your correspondence dated 26 March 2008 regarding the project referenced above.
A search of the Colorado Cultural Resource Inventory indicated that while no surveys for cultural
resources have been conducted in the proposed permit area, two resources have previously been
recorded itl Section 35. Site 5BN163 (a homestead site) was officially classified as "Needs Data"
(further study is needed) in August 1980, but no further research was ever completed. Site 5BN.391
contains several segments of the Old Santa Fe Trail; these were determined to be eligible for the
National Register of Historic Places in October 1986.
Our files contain incomplete information for this area, as most of Colorado has not yet been
inventoried for cultural resources. As a result, there is the possibility that as yet unidentified cultural
resources exist within the permit area. Should human remains be discovered during reclamation
activities, the requirements under State law CRS 24-80 part 13 apply and must be followed.
We were unable to determine whether this proposed action would have an adverse effect on either
property, as the maps that we received were of poor quality and did not show the extent of the planned
operation (the maps that came with your 26 March 20081etter were very dark photocopies). Please
submit clear drawings or maps showing the location of the proposed operation at your earliest
convenience.
Thank you for the opportunity to comment. If we may be of further assistance, please contact Greg
Wolff, Section 106 Compliance Coordinator, at (303) 866-4674.
S~uicnerenly, ~ ^
~ V V ~wV-
~Georgianna Contiguglia
State Historic Preservation ficer
1300 BROADWAY DENVER COLORADO 80203 TEL 303/866-3395 FAx 303/866-271 i www.coloradohistory-oakp.org
E•c~ OFFICE o/' ARCHAEOLOGY and HISTORIC PRESERVATION
