Hernandez `J
Senior Environmental Protection Specialist
RE: Telephone Conversation with Fremont County Commissioner Michael Stiehl
Per Dave Berry's request today, I contacted Fremont County Commissioner Michael Stiehl by
telephone today to verify whether Commissioner Stiehl intended his April 3, 20081etter regarding our
Proposed Decision to approve the Northfield Mine permit application to serve as a request for a Formal.
Public Hearing.
Commissioner Stiehl informed me that he had received our April 3, 2008 letter responding to his letter.
He stated that he intends to submit another letter for the record responding to our letter. He stated that
he wanted to express his desire for a high level of scrutiny at the mine and for any water discharged
from the underground mine workings to be tested for radionuclides and heavy metals. He said,
however, that he did not want to request a Formal Public Hearing.
I conveyed these comments to Dave Berry. Dave stated that we should proceed with our final decision
for the Northfield Mine application, but that given the current level of activity in Fremont County
associated with uranium mining and exploration, we should direct the permiee to investigate
Commissioner Stiehl's concerns through some form of future permitting to include the addition of
radionuclides to the mine's water monitoring requirements. I conveyed Dave's comments to
Commissioner Stiehl by voice-mail message today.
Office of Office of
Mined Land Reclamation Denver Grand Junction Durango Active and Inar_tive Mines
