designated as we1121-4, is located inside the northeast boundary of the first-phase mine panel <br />and is down-gradient of the flow directions. Monitoring we1121-4 has two nested completion <br />zones (A Groove, and B Groove), an adjacent Dissolution surface completion (21-4DX) and an <br />adjacent Uinta well completion (21-4U). This layout provides for up-gradient, down-gradient, <br />and cross-gradient ground water monitoring. In addition to the three multiple-completion well <br />locations, there are a number of single-completion wells at the Piceance Site. The majority of <br />these wells were constructed to monitor the test mine phase and were incorporated into the 0-5 <br />year commercial monitoring plan. Prior to baseline monitoring, some changes were made to the <br />network ofsingle-completion wells including re-completing 20-4 (formerly a B Groove <br />monitoring well) as an A Groove well (now called 20-4A) and installing a new B Groove well <br />(20-4B) adjacent to we1120-4A. We1129-2, which was a Dissolution Surface monitoring well, <br />was also re-completed to become a B Groove well (29-2B). Three new alluvial monitoring wells <br />(19-3, 21-5, and 28-1) were also constructed prior to baseline monitoring. <br />In summary, the 25 well completions at the Piceance Site include three Dissolution Surface <br />completions, six B Groove completions, six A Groove completions, six Uinta completions, and <br />four alluvial completions. In addition to the 25 well completions at the Yankee Gulch Site, one <br />downstream domestic water well (Burke Well - KCHB) has been sampled monthly since it was <br />drilled and completed in February 2000. <br />2.1 Monitoring and Water Quality <br />Ground water monitoring consists of water-level measurement and water-quality sample <br />collection and analysis. The sampling frequencies, sampling methods, and water-quality <br />parameters are provided in this section. As described in Section 1.0, the ground water <br />monitoring program will encompass two different operating schemes; temporary suspension and <br />commercial mining production. <br />2.1.1 Water-Level Monitoring <br />Water level monitoring in all ground water wells will be performed in accordance with the <br />procedures presented in Appendix B, or in accordance with manufacturer's recommendation, <br />where automated water-level equipment is used. <br />During a temporary suspension period, ground water levels will be measured quarterly in all <br />monitoring well completions at the time of quarterly water quality sample collection. During <br />commercial mining operations, water level monitoring will be done monthly for all wells except <br />the domestic well and the dissolution surface wells. At the dissolution surface wells, monitoring <br />will be continuous with hourly averages captured by the DCS or remote logging devices. <br />Monthly manual verification measurements will be taken to ensure that the sensitivity range of <br />the water level probes has not been exceeded.
