New tionzon Mine; 2Q07 Vegetation Sampling for Phase 3 Sand Release
3.4 RESULTS: IRRIGATED PASTURE
3.i Irrictated Pasture Reference Area
During the field inspection of the reference area with Dan Mathews of CDRMS, it was agreed
that a portion of the pasture in the southwest comer had been disturbed by livestock winter
feeding, and should be excluded from the reference area. We avoided sampling in that area,
and figure 3 shows the approximate location of the excluded area.
Cover measurements for each transact and summary statistics are shown in Table A7
{Appendix A). Fifteen cover transacts were completed, and sample adequacy was not
demonstrated because of the relatively high variance of the sample mean caused by the
somewhat uneven distribution of desirable vegetation in the pasture. For the statistics!
procedures that ultimately were selected based on the nature of the collecked data, a minimum
of 30 samples was required. However, this was not apparent at the time of sampling, and only
15 cover samples were obtained.
Production data and summary statistics era shown in Table A7. Forty-four plots were sampled
without reaching sample adequacy, again due to the somewhat uneven production in the
pasture.
3.2 Irrictated Pasture Phase 3 Bond Release Area
Cover measurements far each transact and summary statistics are shown in Table A3.
Seventeen samples were taken, and sample adequacy was demonstrated. Sample variance
was low, reflecting the high homogeneity of cover on the reclaimed area.
Production measurements and summary statistics are shown fi Table A9. We measured
production in 31 sample plots, and sample adequacy was demonstrated. Cover and production
estimates are summarized and rx~mpared in Table 1.
Table 1. The mean value in the Phase 3 reclaimed areas substantially exceeds the mean in the
reference area. No statistical comparison of the moans acceptable io CDRMS is possible.
Because sample adequacy was not demonstrated for cover in the reference area, atwo-sample
reverse-null statistical test is necessary to compare means {statistical pracedura #4 under
'"Definitions", above}. However, not enough samples were taken in either area to meet the
minimum of 30 samples required by CDRMS. We discussed this situation with CDRMS botanist
Dan Mathews, and he stated that CDRMS would not accept the existing sample data or any
6r0.togrc t»nvTmnmanta!
November 12.200T
Attachment 1-7
