deposit thins toward the south and is thicker toward the northern sloped
eroded hillside areas that drop off the ridge top.
Test pits excavated at the site (above the old pit and along upper gentler slopes
3 to 12 % slopes) have been described as having less than 8 inches of
loan/topsoil covering the underlying aggregate. The aggregate material was
described as being very coazse sandy gravel with > 50% rock materials. The
rock is composed of mostly 2 to 10 inch sub-angular to sub-rounded cobbles
andi rock fragments with some thin very coarse sand lamiae extending to the
underlying bedrock in some pits to a depth >25 feet.
The deposit is oriented in a triangular area from just above the "old pit" area
south, up the slope to the southern fence line then east to a point where the
large draw truncates the gravel deposit. The draw is located on the map at a
point a little more than '/2 of the distance across site along the ridge to the east
permit boundary.
The soils in the area of the proposed operation area as mapped and described by the
U.S.D.A. Soil Conservation Service consists of soils belonging to the following types
(Maps and Non-Technical Soil Descriptions are attached to the soils exhibit section). The
soil types are listed in the order of their possible aggregate potentials as indicated in
typical site test pit descriptions and typical exposures from the previous mined and
disturbed site areas. Permit area soil types are as follows:
^ Torriorthents-Torripsamments,l2 to 40% slopes
^ Tresano, sandy loam, 3 to 12% slopes
^ Rock River, sandy loam, 12 to 25% slopes
^ Ryan Park loamy sand complex, 3 to 15
^ Youngston, loam well drained 0 to 3 % slopes
There will be no mining to the east of the "cut-off' draw feature as the major
aggregate deposit is all to the west. The east'/z of the site may provide some
surplus topsoil (Ryan Park sandy loam, 170) for future reclamation from the
northeast edge of the site between the dry drainages and the slope toe. The
west edge of the site will also not be mined either. This area is also located
between the dry drainage and the base of the slope area. The soils here
(~'oungston loam, 223) may also provide some additional limited reclamation
cover soils. Any areas disturbed by removing surplus reclamation soils will be
inunediately tilled seeded and reclaimed as soon as possible. Any surplus
topsoil will be stripped and stockpiled at convenient locations adjacent to the
active mine areas for use in subsequent concurrent reclamation activities. If
topsoil stockpiles are to be left for more than I growing season, they will be
seeded with the USDA recommended seed mix via broadcast method.
