Mexican Spotted Owl -this bird of prey is a threatened species and is found in the Arkansas River
drainage. The closest documented site of where this species exists is located near Wetmore, CO, within the Wet
Mountains and near Canon City, CO, within Phantom Canyon. This species prefers areas of mature, dark timber,
with lots of downfall and at elevations exceeding 7,500 feet. Although this property is within the geographic range
of the species, it is not believed that the actions proposed on this property will have any impact on the Mexican
Spotted Owl.
Other species that maybe potentially impacted include Elk, Mule Deer, Bighorn Sheep, Black Bear,
Mountain Lion and other various small game, reptiles, birds and non-game species. It is believed that the actions
proposed on this property will have little impact these species listed above as well.
To minimize these impacts we would recommend that any fences that are constructed are done so using the
following guidelines. The top and bottom wire shall be smooth wire, rather than barbed. The bottom wire shall be
set at a minimum of 16" off the ground. The top wire shall be set at a maximum of 40" off the ground, with the
next closest wire at least 12" lower. During any reclamation efforts we would recommend that any disturbed areas
be seeded with a native grass and shrub mixture, and that the plants be given time to become established in order to
be of the greatest benefit to wildlife.
If you have any questions feel free to call our Salida office at (719) 530-5520. Thank you once again for
the opportunity to comment.
Sincerely,
O""
Jim Aragon
Area Wildlife Manager

•
