Mexican Spotted Owl -this bird of prey is a threatened species and is found in the Arkansas River <br />drainage. The closest documented site of where this species exists is located near Wetmore, CO, within the Wet <br />Mountains and near Canon City, CO, within Phantom Canyon. This species prefers areas of mature, dark timber, <br />with lots of downfall and at elevations exceeding 7,500 feet. Although this property is within the geographic range <br />of the species, it is not believed that the actions proposed on this property will have any impact on the Mexican <br />Spotted Owl. <br />Other species that maybe potentially impacted include Elk, Mule Deer, Bighorn Sheep, Black Bear, <br />Mountain Lion and other various small game, reptiles, birds and non-game species. It is believed that the actions <br />proposed on this property will have little impact these species listed above as well. <br />To minimize these impacts we would recommend that any fences that are constructed are done so using the <br />following guidelines. The top and bottom wire shall be smooth wire, rather than barbed. The bottom wire shall be <br />set at a minimum of 16" off the ground. The top wire shall be set at a maximum of 40" off the ground, with the <br />next closest wire at least 12" lower. During any reclamation efforts we would recommend that any disturbed areas <br />be seeded with a native grass and shrub mixture, and that the plants be given time to become established in order to <br />be of the greatest benefit to wildlife. <br />If you have any questions feel free to call our Salida office at (719) 530-5520.
